Adams Couty was established in 1836 and named after John Quincy Adams, the sixth president of the United States. The county seat is Decatur.

The land making up the county was obtained from the Wyndots in 1817 at the Treaty of the Rapids. One of the main people groups were the Swiss at Berne, Indiana.

World renowned Indiana author and naturalist, Gene Stratton Porter began her career at Limberlost, her home from 1895 to 1913. Porter named her home in honor of the vast wilderness of swamps, forests and marshes that surrounded the area.
