Mapping and Research for Decatur County, Indiana

Organized December 31, 1821, Decatur County was named for Commodore Stephen Decatur. His daring in Tripoli was exceeded in the early stages
of the War of 1812 when he won one of that war's great naval victories, capturing the British frigate "Macedonian." Although he was killed in a
duel in 1820 by James Barron who accused him of blocking his promotion, Decatur is principally remembered for his toast on returning from
triumphal tour of the Barbary Coast..."Our Country, may she always be right, but our country, right or wrong!"

Greensburg is the County Seat. Tradition says that the wife of Colonel Thomas Hendricks named this town in honor of her hometown in Pennsylvania.

The Courthouse in Greensburg is famous for the tree growing from the tower.
