Mapping and Research for Fayette County, Indiana

Organized December 28, 1818, by an act of the Legislature, Fayette County was named for the Revolutionary War General Marquis de Lafayette.

Connersville is the County Seat. A man named John Conner, who was an Indian trader decided to move his trading post to a place where the Indians had a right to come. Conner followed the trails the Indians had made to get to their hunting grounds and established his trading post at the west for of the Whitewater Valley River in 1808. Conner laid out the town of Connersville in 1813.

The first court house completed in 1849 and was 40 square feet and 2 stories high and cost $1,262. It was extensively remodeled in 1890 and again in 1960. Except for the 2 rooms that have been added on the west side, and for the fact that some of the trimming has been taken off, it is the same as when it was first built.

The Whitewater Canal started in 1836 passed through Connersville and helped the city to prosper by providing shipping. Eventually railroads began spreading across the country and in 1863 a railroad company bought the canal company and tracks were laid along the towpath.

Since our state capital at Indianapolis was not as old as Connersville, the jail at Connersville was used by the sheriff at Indianapolis until their jail was built. Couples wanting to get married had to come to the courthouse at Connersville until the Indianapolis courthouse was built.

Connersville became known as a "furniture and buggy town" because there were several factories making these products. As the automobile or horseless carriage appeared on the scene, the buggy and wagon were pushed aside.

Several different lines of automobiles were made at Connersville--the Lexington, the McFarlan, the Cord, the Auburn, and the Empire. The McFarland Carriage Company manufactured the first medium priced 6-cylinder automobile in the United States in 1909. Due to the success of the Lexington, many factories converted to making parts for the autos. In fact, nearly all the parts needed to make an automobile were made in Connersville, earning the title of "Little Detroit".

Connersville also had the first free fair in the state held in September of 1852. Connersville was also the home of the first high school band and the first industrial park in the nation. See http://www.edgeconnersville.com
