Mapping and Research for Grant County, Indiana

Organized on April 1, 1832, Grant County was named for Captains Moses and Samuel Grant, Kentucky frontier fighters, who were killed in 1821.

Marion is the County Seat was selected during the summer of 1831 and the first lots were sold on the the first Monday of November, the first settlers being David Bronson and Martin Boots. The first Courthouse was not erected until three years later and by 1849 the population was 700.

Grant County is also the site of Marion College and Taylor University. Also, the Miller Purdue Experimental Farm is located in the eastern part
of the county.

The Cumberland Covered bridge at Matthews is thought to be the longest, single span truss-type covered bridge ever constructed and is still in use.
