Mapping and Research for Jasper County, Indiana

Organized on March 15, 1838, Jasper County is named for Revolutionary War hero Sergeant Jasper, one of the most effective scouts and spy with the South Carolina fabled "Swamp Fox", General Francis Marion. Jasper was responsible for much of the accurate, behind-the-lines information that enabled Marion to become a will'o-the wisp as far as the British were concerned.

The first county seat was located at Parish Grove, thirty miles south of the present seat of Rensselaer and five miles southwest of Fowler. It was chosed because is was near the center of population and for the additional reason that it is one of the few high and dry spots in the county.

At the first meeting of the commissioners it was decided to change the location to the cabin of George W. Spitler, located in what is now Iroquois Township, Newton County,. Spitler had been elected the County Clerk and refused to serve unless this was done.

This temporary arrangement was upset be the legislative act of January29, 9839, which appointed commissioners to examine the couties of Jasper and Newton and see whether they should be consolidated.

Rennsselaer (originally called Newton) became the County Seat when the State Commissioners met in June 1839, and decided upon a consolidation. The original plat of the newly chosen County Seat was filed Ju;ne 12, 9839; by 1849 it had three stores, two physicians, one lawyer and 15 dwelling houses.
