Mapping and Research for Jay County, Indiana
The County was named for John Jay who was Secretary of State of the United States, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and Governor of New York.
Jay County was formally organized March 1, 1836, with Portland as the County Seat. First settled in 1837 by H.H. Cuppy, C. Hanna, D.W. McNeil, and others, by 1849, it contained 60 houses and had a population of 300.
The Limberlost Swamp State Historic Site is located in northern Jay County and southern Adams County. To the famed Indiana author, Gene Stratton-Porter, the swamp was her playground, her laboratory and her inspiration for many of her acclaimed books and photographs.
