From the French term meaning "The Door", LaPorte County, reflects her
natural access to the Great Lakes.
The City of Laporte is the County Seat. It was first settled in 1832 and
by 1849 it contained a flourishing Medical College, and Academy and
several High Schools.
La Porte County is one of only two counties in the United States that
has two functioning Courthouses, the other being Logan County,

The Michigan City Pier and Lighthouse is Indiana's only operating
lighthouse.
